What happens if the ground hog sees his shadow - Lesson plans and activities

While all done in jest, the tradition of Ground Hogs Day states that when the ground hog comes out of his burrow he will either see his shadow to bring six more weeks of winter weather.  Or, he will not see his shadow.  The latter of the folklore is said to bring an early spring.  So, what happens if winter temperatures never even got cold enough to bring a snow day?

In the St. Louis area, the winter has been extremely mild this year.  Just yesterday, according to meteorologist Steve Templeton at News Channel 4, another century-old weather record was broken when temperatures reached 67 degrees.

Yet, on February 2, Ground Hogs Day will continue as usual.  In some cities, this calls for elaborate ceremonies revolving around a rodent with good PR.  In St. Louis, however, the ground hog that resides at the St. Louis Zoo is just a tad bit too grumpy.  So, all of St. Louis will look to the official ground hog (usually referred to as Punxsutawney Phil) to determine if the unofficial start of spring will begin early, or if winter will continue for six more weeks.
