By now you have probably seen old pictures on social media on Thursday of each week. That's because a trend has been around for a while called "Throwback Thursday."

Throwback Thursday is the name of a weekly theme that social media users participate in as part of a very general "throwback" activity for posting content.

On Thursdays, people usually post photos on sites like Instagram, Twitter, Tumblr or Facebook that are a blast from the past. Photos can be from years ago or from just a few days, weeks or months ago. There aren't really any special rules or limitations.

Throwback Thursday is very popular on Instagram, and users often tag their photos with a variety of hashtags like #TBT, #ThrowbackThursday or just simply #Throwback. Adding these hashtags can help the photos get more exposure from a wider audience of people who are searching through those tags.

The trend is quickly catching on, and some even post things other than photos. Their content may also include songs, movies, celebrities and videos from the past.

Throwback Thursday isn't anything new even though some people are just getting into it. The origin probably dates back to 2011 when @bobbysanders22 first used it. It became a trending subject on Google Trends in 2012.

In 2014, more and more people are participating. It is fun and entertaining to look at old photos. We see what our friends looked like in days gone by before we got to know them.

This writer posted her first Throwback Thursday photos on Feb. 27, 2014. It was a delight to see the comments made about them.
