Blessed ... are the poor in spirit (the humble, who rate themselves insignificant), for theirs is the kingdom of heaven! (Matthew 5:3 AMP)
Poor in spirit seems down, sad even, with their shoulders rolled forward. Normally those who feel insignificant we say have a low self esteem. Why would Jesus want us to feel like a door mat people can step on?
I don't believe He does. Poor in spirit means humble, rating themselves insignificant. Humble is handsome or pretty. It's giving to the other before yourself. It's having a listening ear. It's surprising someone with a task completed for them. Humility is difficult but very beautiful.
Then to feel insignificant is honest. First of all there are millions upon millions of people in the world right now. And then there's God who is omnipresent, omniscient, omnipotent. How does a guy or girl compare with that?
A person humble and insignificant has the Kingdom of Heaven within. So they may be humble and insignificant to us but when they pray Heaven hears and God moves. They have a purity and a Light within. And heaven is where God lives so that must mean they're pretty close to Him as in very near.
