As accurately as I can figure it out, what being pro-life really means is this: "I want to be able to do anything I want, including gun down children in an elementary school, and no one can stand between me and my guns. Furthermore, I demand the right to dictate to other Americans what they may and may not do. I am 'pro-MY-life' and 'anti' anything that anybody else wants to do unless I approve."
Isn't this what it boils down to, in reality? We know that the Republican Party Platform advocates outlawing abortion for any reason; if it were enacted into law, pregnant women would die in agony all over the United States, and their unborn babies would die with them. The simple reason for this is that the Republican party central committee does not get input from actual doctors when they write their platform.
Republican doctors are proud to speak out and proclaim that they now realize that everything they learned in medical school was "lies straight from the pit of Hell." I don't want their input on my health care, do you?
The right-wing fascist fanatics who are occupying the Republican Party today are making for more and more moderate Democrats, I'll give them that. But something's gotta give sooner or later, and I hope that someone in the party, hopefully a powerful Republican like Governor Chris Christie of New Jersey, will finally arrive at an understanding of what is going on and take a stand. I think Christie could retake control from the Teabaggers and re-establish a true Republican Party that would hark back to the days of President Dwight D. Eisenhower. I also continue to hope that Arizona's own Meghan McCain will step into the moral vacuum of Republican politics and start making a higher-profile stand for sanity on the right.
Former Tucson Representative Gabrielle Giffords announced an initiative for gun control after the Congress and the Arizona State Legislature did precisely nothing after she was shot in a Safeway parking lot. If you live in Arizona and you would rather not do your grocery shopping in a crossfire, you might think about supporting her in some way.
Meanwhile, as deranged individuals decide to go shoot up a school or a shopping mall, the only comment they get from the Republicans is: "Oh, okay, have you got a good rifle? There's a special on them at Walmart!"
