Young Drizzy - Drake
By now, if you're a true hip hop connoisseur, you've heard rumblings about Aubrey "Drake" Graham, a.k.a. Drake, a.k.a. Shopping Bag Drizzy, a.k.a. Young Angel, etc. Dude has recently taken radio stations by storm with his guest appearance on Lil' Wayne's smash "We Like Her." Drake recently dropped his own single called "The Best I Ever Had." It seems like the masses are loving it and it's headed to a nice summer heater.
"The Best...." is from Drake's 3rd (yes, THIRD) mixtape (yes, MIXTAPE) entitled "So Far Gone." (You're Welcome).
Nope, Drake has yet to drop an "official" CD yet. As a matter of fact, he has yet to sign a true record deal.

That's Drake in the Wheelchair
Most don't know, but Drake played Jimmy Brooks, on Nickelodeon's Degrassi: Next Generation. In the later seasons, Drake's character was shot (go figure...the black-ish guy...and basketball player gets shot). Drake's character, being a newly disabled student was definitely a bold move for Nickelodeon. Who would've known that little Jimmy would end up being the next heir apparent in the rap game.

Young Drake and the King.
Enough of the Nickelodeon stuff...Drake HAS SKILLS!!! He is a true MC. HIs MONSTER of a mixtape, So Far Gone has been heralded as one of the best mixtapes of the 08-09 season. I heard of Drake through some of the college students I work with...about 9 months ago. The students on campus, knew about Drake LONG before he gained any sort of "critical" success of acclaim.
That's the wonderful influence and impact of hip hop. I consider myself pretty involved with the culture. I lean more towards and know more about "maintstream and signed" artist. In the past 5-7 years, with the development of on-line production tools, blogs, and the development of social networking, I have been introduced to some of the most amazing, unsigned artists. Additionally, the artists have had an opportunity to make and distribute their own music relatively easily... Oh yeah... He sings too!
With all that said...you NEED to get your hands on Drake's newest mixtape, So Far Gone. He's giving it away on his webiste/blog...Check it out IMMEDIATELY!
I'll do a more detailed review of his mixtapes...but GET FAMILIAR!!!

he is a beast! has been for a while and now coming up!
yeah and the Jonas Brothers are on their way to being the greatest American rock band now, right? This is just some fruity nickelodeon ish...Putting out a mixtape with a bunch of random cliche tracks doesn't make you a true emcee. Sure the dude "can" rap, but in all honesty who can't speak with some rhythm over some cheesy 808 beat these days. I give it a 2 for lyrical content, a 4 for production quality, and maybe a 0.5 for importance. I do, however give it a big fat 10 for being a waste of my friday morning...
LOL @ Xero. I have to call it...You're being a hater...
Everyone that raps doesn't have to rap about "the cause!" Just because Drake isn't rapping about the gentrification of urban environments, doesn't mean that he doesn't have a lot to say...to the people of his (our) generation...
The joint..."Brand New..." is a very honest look into a new relationship... The song "Say What's Real..." COME On! How can you not say that is ill...
"Why do I feel so alone, like everybody passing through the studio is in character like they playin out a movie role?"
For me...he's the perfect mixture of independent and mainstream that's (going to make him) successful and relevant to more than the back packers, the thugs, etc...
Also, go back and listen to his last mixtape..."Comeback Season." It's a lot more lyrical and less "singy."
yeah, xero you're probably still waiting for that next X-Clan and P.E. CD's. I fux with Drake! But I also fux with DOOM, Madlib, Luda and Elzhi. Good music is good music. What was Rae and Ghost talking about on the Purple Tape??? If that came out now you prob wouldn't mess with that either....
HEY! I liked Cuban Linx! I'll admit Ghost isn't my favorite Wu member but I still give him his respect and I definitely dig Raekwon. For real though it's Gza and U-God/Golden Arms for me, and of course Meth. I don't care how many cheesy movies and Right Guard commercials that dude does Method Man and Red Man are some real Emcees.
And yeah, I like good music, not just underground stuff. S..t, I like some watery pop songs too, I just don't like cheap, plastic rap music.
I'll have to admit the cheesy down south accent from a Canadian rapper with the incredibly trite and cliche 808 beats on most of this mix is driving my hater status for Drake and he's really not that bad underneath it all but I still just don't feel his stuff, sorry.
