The lottery is in the news again. Springfield Christians are buying lottery tickets and praying to win a slice of the jackpot. The amount is bringing out the greed in some while others speculate on what ministry possibilities millions would open for a follower of Christ.
Which area of need would your family focus on? The homeless, drug addiction, child abuse, diseases that have impacted your family or other charitable work. Planning a strategy for utilizing a large windfall is a method to avoid greedy thoughts. Don’t focus on what the money could do for you, but what the money could accomplish in the Kingdom.
The first step might be to establish a not for profit foundation before claiming the prize. In this manner all or most of the money could be placed into the organization’s coffers and bypass the loss of as much as possible to taxes. Family, friends and church leaders could be placed on the board of directors and contribute ideas that you might not think of.
Loss of a job and the subsequent period of unemployment have shown many areas of need that are not currently provided for. Foreclosures continue to rise in Springfield and many need help with refinancing home loans and creative ways of making the payments. Government programs have not helped as much as was hoped. The cost of insurance continues to rise in spite of promises made about the affordable care act.
Job creation and training programs are more ways these funds could meet needs in the community. Helping to put a ministry in the enviable position of being funded for the next twenty years or more seems a useful way to invest winnings that might be thought of as feeding selfishness. What is good and beautiful and helpful, think on these things. How would God be glorified, if you had the winning Mega Millions ticket?
