What can you learn from Lucy?

"Oh, now, honey, I don't know..." (credit)

When you are stuck in the house with bronchitis / laryngitis and the doctor ordered plenty of rest, there is not much to do, once you’ve run out of books, except watch television. If you’re not familiar with television, this can be quite the eye-opener. Particularly if you are not a television addict, or do not subscribe to cable (5,000 channels to include a sports package plus all the Russian soap operas but wait there’s more order now and--).

Daytime television is overflowing with shows where people are shouting at each other: he said – she said - they said, you’re a lousy excuse for a grandparent, I’m suing her because, and Who’s The Daddy. No wonder we’re a nation confused. But the nighttime brings some relief. The nighttime brings “I Love Lucy.”

Ricky, Lucy, Ethel, and Fred relied on physical and visual gags – read: raw talent – much more so than the yuppies on shows like “Friends,” and they did it with finesse.  They were wholesome. When Fred got upset he said, “oh, for corn’s sake!”  They were loyal. Ricky never stepped out on his wife – or wanted to. Each could say more with a glance than with a sentence. And to this day you still laugh, despite your knowing the outcome, when Lucy smuggles the cheese on board the airplane, pretending it’s a baby.

Everything you need to learn about life is on “I Love Lucy.”

10. Diversity makes us interesting; it’s a good thing.

9. Scheming never works. The truth always serves best and will come out in the end, anyway.

8. If you argue with true friends, make up as soon as you can and forget about why you disagreed as       quickly as you can.

7. Laughter is important. Keep it in your marriage/partnership, in your friendships, but most of all, within yourself.

6. Follow your dreams. If you want to be in the show, find a way.

5. Support your friend, even when it sounds crazy to you.

4. Quarrels and snarls with neighbors over petty things never matter in the end. You learn petty things are just that.

3. Sure, Ricky ranted about being the boss of his castle and the Mertzes complained about their marriage, but did they really mean it? True love wins out.

2. Nothing is as important as a great friend.

1. What did YOU learn?

Hi Judith.......Your article on I Love Lucy is delightful and thought-provoking. I have every "I Love Lucy" and "Lucy-Desi Comedy Hour" episode on DVD. I enjoy watching episodes anytime I want. You are 100% correct: Everything you need to learn about life is on "I Love Lucy". I learned that spending quality time with your family and friends adds to the overall quality of your life. It doesn't matter whether you go out to dinner and a movie, or just stay home and play card games or watch TV together and have a conversation. Spend time together, be there for each other, because one day you will not be together. Thank you, Judith..........Peter from Toronto, Canada.
