Dear LA Teacher,
I’m so sick and tired of the National Rifle Association (NRA) and the grip it has over our lawmakers. After the shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary the NRA is proposing armed school officials. What can we do about the NRA?

Dear Pro Gun Control Mom,
The slaughter of 20 young children and 7 adults at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Connecticut on December 14, 2012 was a tragedy and a national embarrassment. To compound the disaster the NRA suggests teachers and administrators come to school packing a sidearm.
You and I aren’t the only ones outraged by these events. According to a poll taken on January 9, 2013 by Public Policy Polling (PPP), 64% of respondents felt that arming teachers was an ill conceived notion.
Vice President Joseph Biden, heading a task force on gun violence, would agree. He reports that support for banning high-capacity magazines is at a historic high.
On Tuesday, January 15, 2013 Biden will place on President Obama’s desk recommendations to reduce gun violence. Some of these issues will be mentioned in the President’s State of the Union Address in early February. The President will probably include comments in his speech on these issues:
1. The mental health of gun buyers.
2. Reinstatement of an assault weapons ban.
3. Ban on high-capacity magazines.
The NRA will probably flood the airwaves about Second Amendment rights, but we need to ask ourselves an important question. Who does the NRA represent? Is it the American gun owner or gun manufacturers?
With children frightened to go to school because some freak could enter their classroom like Rambo and open fire, it is up to Americans, like you and me, to let our congressional representatives know how we feel regarding this issue.
I strongly suggest everyone reading this article write to their congressperson or senator and say NO to assault rifles and high-capacity magazines—instruments of war, and not designed for individual protection and recreational hunting.
Best wishes,
LA Teacher
