As a father and husband the grocery shopping has become my responsibility in the family and as the Charleston Personal Finance Examiner, learning how to save money is something important. The first thing you should do is write your grocery list. Go into the pantry or kitchen cabinets and do an audit of what you have on hand. Then, taking what you have and what you don't have, write a grocery list to reflect the number of meals and other associated groceries the family will need for the time period required. For instance, living in North Charleston, we have two Super Wal-Mart grocery stores within 6 miles of our house as well as a Bi-Lo, Food Lion, Piggly Wiggly, Publix and Super K-Mart. Because of this grocery shopping is a twice the week activity. Grocery shopping is a twice a week activity because on Wednesday, Publix runs their 1 cent item now on that day. Also, the new ads for the various grocery stores come out on Wednesday. The next important thing to note about saving money grocery shopping is this: DON'T TAKE YOUR KIDS GROCERY SHOPPING WITH YOU IF AT ALL POSSIBLE!!! When you take kids with you grocery shopping, you will always spend more money than you want to. This is a fact. The last point I want to make is this: When you write your grocery list, DO NOT DEVIATE FROM IT. DO NOT BUY ANYTHING NOT ON YOUR GROCERY LIST. EVER. Grocery stores are very clever about setting up displays next to the registers. I'll say this again DO NOT BUY ANYTHING THAT IS NOT ON YOUR GROCERY LIST.
