A few days before the midterm elections this year President Obama saw a turning point in his Presidency and Connecticut saw a town fired up enough to pull the CT democrats to victory, single handedly. Obama's Bridgeport rally and former President Clinton's Norwalk rally marked the return of the fired-up Democrat, something that Americans have not seen since a few years ago. Obama was tested as he came to rally for the Connecticut Democrats, including senate hopeful Richard Blumenthal, soon to be Mayor Dan Malloy, and Congressman Jim Himes from our beloved fourth district which includes proves to be our most diverse district.
It began normally, Obama came out to a few thousand cheering fans and supporters, but for the first time the President actually had to stop during his speech to calm down a few protesters in the crowd, something that the composed President has not really had to deal with at a rally since, well ever. Overall, the rally went well, President Obama brought all three candidates out and with that, thousands showed up, screaming and cheering for the candidates, all who were there again, to show that change could still occur in the US and the prospective leaders on that stage were the people who would help to bring that change.
Yet the best was yet to come, the following day, former President Clinton followed the popular Obama rally up with a Halloween night speech in front of fired up Norwalk crowd in a small field house in South Norwalk. He asked for the prospective voters or assess the facts rather than just be angry, to look at what President Obama had done thus far. President Clinton asked for each and every person to simply, look at the a few things that Obama has done for the American people two years into office: a dramatic tax cut extending to the middle class, as well as a health care bill that would help to cover many, including young people (like this writer) who could stay on their parents plan until the age of 26. These two men came to CT because they saw an opportunity for Connecticut to be a leader for the Democratic Party in the upcoming election. These two men helped to fire up a South Western Connecticut crowd that needed to be roused up and because of these two rallies, Norwalk and Bridgeport delivered thousands of votes for the Democrats.
Although victory for the Democrats was a substantial occurrence, it is certainly not enough. Americans are angry, we were told change would occur when it has not to the extent we need, we were told that we would be provided with a ladder to climb out of a hole when it seems as if the ladder has yet to reach us, and most of all we see for the first time in a long time, a significant almost child-like disagreement with our leaders on how to properly compromise when we need compromise more than ever. But what President Obama and former President Clinton did for Connecticut was put the facts back into the prospective voters eyes. That is, it is going to take a lot of work for America to climb out of our "hole" but the people of Connecticut need leaders who have been there for us in the past, whether it was Blumenthal who has put the people of CT first, or Jim Himes, who seems to personify the diversity and hard working attitude that the fourth district has, these men along with the remaining leaders of Connecticut will help to push the ladder down just a bit further, and help us all climb back up.
