“ … let us lay aside every weight, …. And let us run with endurance the race that is set before us, looking onto Jesus, the author and finisher of our faith.” (Hebrews 12:1)
We all make plans, set goals. We look forward to a future date, a destination or the achievement of a goal. We petition the Lord in prayer and then try to have patience as we wait for our prayers to be answered. But If you examine the nature of your prayers, how often is it for some thing to happen in the future – with respect to health, finances, relationships or personal goals? And then, you wait for its fulfillment. That manner of thinking, and living, generally results in one thing – it adds anxiety to your life. In Matthew chapter 6, Jesus preaches that we are not to worry.
When the above traits and thoughts characterize us, we are not living the Christian life. We should be waiting for nothing, because we already have the only thing that is important. We have the never-ending presence of God …. 24/7. When we truly focus on Jesus, His sovereignty, the fact that He loves us unconditionally, that He is constantly fulfilling His purposes in our lives and that He will always provide for our needs (and our needs are often not what we are asking for in our prayers), then our perspectives change. We realize we already are at our eternal destination – our relationship with our Creator, “running the race that is set before us” and experiencing His peace that surpasses all understanding that will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.” (Phil 4:6-7)
