What are sustainable landscapes?

You may have heard the term ‘sustainable landscapes’ recently and wondered what that means. For desert communities such as Tucson and Green Valley, sustainability has some very specific implications.

Sustainable landscapes in the desert means choosing plants that are drought tolerant. This includes natives and desert adapted plants. It also means using drip irrigation systems, and making sure they are functioning correctly. Adjusting irrigation systems for at least summer and winter watering is crucial, as otherwise you may be over or under watering at least six months a year.

Sustainable landscapes also include Xeriscape principles such as using passive water harvesting techniques for supplemental irrigation. This can be as simple as building tree wells or installing a rain barrel under your downspout.

If you are already incorporating these techniques in your yard, congratulations! You have bragging rights to tell friends and neighbors that you are helping the environment by making your landscaping sustainable.
