The Nightshade foods are: potatoes, eggplant, tomatoes, chili peppers, jalapenos, red, yellow, cayenne and green peppers. Remember that vodka is made from potato peel so it must also be eliminated from your diet. I can’t imagine my life without tomatoes. They are undoubtedly my favorite food. I am currently reading this book “Pain Free in Six Weeks” by Dr. Sherry Rogers, MD. It discusses how eating a nightshade free diet will eliminate all your pain from arthritis, lupus, fibromyalgia, back ache etc. By eliminating the nightshades from your diet you can eliminate most chronic pain in only six weeks. I do plan to give it a try but I know I will have trouble because I love spicy food and all the nightshades. My favorite food is Indian Food which is full of curry. Curry contains several of the forbidden spices on the nightshade list. What’s crazy is I saw a testimonial from a lady who thought she was being super healthy by eating the last of her neighbor’s summer garden. She was eating green, red, and yellow organically grown vegetables and thinking she was being super healthy as we all would. Her fingers began to swell and her joints hurt. As she went into fall and winter and didn’t have access to the same foods her symptoms subsided.

I plan on trying this elimination diet for two months and will report my results back to you. I suffer from fibromyalgia, very mild arthritis and plantar fasciitis in my left foot as well as back pain. Dr. Rogers book claims that these nightshade foods cause food sensitivity and swelling and that chronic pain can not be present without swelling. Many really great diets focus on eliminating swelling (edema) and foods that cause swelling. The Dr. Perricone Principle is one of these diets which I have written about previously. I am not sure that I buy into the nightshade elimination theory yet but I am open minded and willing to give it a try to find out for myself.
