Banana Joe, the Affenpinscher, won Best In Show at the Westminster Kennel Club Dog Show on Feb. 12. According to a report from ABC News on Feb. 12, this was the first time an Affenpinscher had ever won Best in Show.
This was Banana Joe's final dog show. The 4-year-old champion retired after the dog show. Banana Joe flew back to his home in the Netherlands after the show.
“Banana Joe was really cute,” Danielle Woodward, from Oklahoma City, said. “He looked like one of the monkeys from 'The Wizard of Oz.' I loved his little legs and feet. He didn't look like he was big enough to be in the show ring.”
Swagger, the Old English Sheepdog won Reserve Best in Show. This was the first year this honor had ever been given. Swagger didn't have enough points to qualify for champion, but was able to pull an upset when he was chosen as the best in the herding group.
Affenpinschers originated in Germany. “Affie” means monkey or ape in German. The Affenpinschers are known for their monkey-like faces. They are in the toy group.
