What's different about the 2010 Westminster Dog Show? Besides a change in dates, this popular event is also showcasing three new breeds. These breeds are ones that haven't competed in the past. They are the Norwegian Buhund, Pyrenean Shepherd and Irish Red and White Setter. Here's an overview of each dog.

Norwegian Buhund
The Norwegian Buhund is a farm dog from Norway used to herd livestock, guard property and hunt game. His look - a double coated, squarely-built spitz and tightly-curled tail - is distinct. Norwegian Buhunds are known to have lots of energy, strength and stamina. This may account for his past history of running around with Vikings.

Pyrenean Shepherd
The Pyrenean Shepherd often called "pyr shep" is a traditional working companion of the larger Great Pyrenees. Together, these canines herd sheep and other livestock. The Pyrrenean Shepherd is small in weight and stature. These days, in its homeland of France, this dog is a popular choice for a family pet.

Irish Red and White Setter
The Irish Red and White Setter is a dog known for it's powerful, athletic build and intelligence. Primarly used for field work, this breed was first discovered in the 17th century. Unfortunately, by the 1920's, the Irish Red and White Setter was almost extinct. Only a 1940's revival of this breed kept it in existence.

These three new breeds are sure to give the other dogs at Westminster Dog Show a run for their money. Be sure to check in on all of the festivities on Feb. 16. Also, visit the Westminster Dog Show official website at www.westminsterkennelclub.org.
