Westminister Dog Show this weekend

The Westminster Dog show is February 9 thru 12, 2012.  This is along with the usual genera of dogs will be a dog in a class all by himself.  This animal is a Certified Therapy Dog who will be competing in the agility course competition.  Nami of Anchorage, Alaska was invited by Angels on a Leash (the therapy dogs of Westminster Dog Show and AKC).

Although we hear much about working dogs these days with the increased publicity of therapy dogs, Seeing Eye dogs and helper dogs for the physical impaired.  Westminster and AKC have long supported this working dog group.  Angels on a Leash will be having their event on Saturday evening, 2/11/12 from 5:00 to 7:00PM.

The general public is learning much about the kinds of service these animals can provide.  A few years ago you heard very little about one of these dogs unless it was a Seeing Eye dog.  Now we know they can provide support for physically limited persons so that they can continue to live independently or with minimal human support.  We have learned of their ability to help the persons suffering from PTSD (Until Tuesday-A wounded Warrior and the Golden Retriever who saved him by Former US Army Captain Luis Carlos Montalvan with Brett Witter) and we have learned of their uncanny ability to search out medical problems that even with all our medical advances humans could not find.  I am speaking of the dogs used to find cancer.  Many dogs are used to provide support to individuals who suffer seizures by providing a warning to the person giving them time to get in a safe place prior to the seizure.

We have come a long way in our knowledge of how dogs can work hand and paw with people to provide better lives.  With the help of assistance dog people are able to stay in their own homes pursue their careers and move forward in their lives.  Congratulations to Nami because win, lose or draw you have won the admiration of all people with disabilities and their families and friends.  You are a winner and true champion.
