Westmen win 2014 Mac's Midget Hockey Tourament

According to Shaw Cable, the Westman Wildcats have won the 2014 Mac's Midget Hockey Tournament in Calgary by beating the Fraser Valley Phantom 3-2 in triple overtime on Wednesday at the Scotiabank Saddledome.

Megan Robertson scored the game winning goal for the Wildcats in the dying seconds of the third overtime period. The Wildcats, who are based out of Hartney, Manitoba, near Brandon, went on a three on one rush into the Phantom zone. Their first two shots were saved by the Wildcats goaltender Valencia Yordanov before Robertson scored the winner.

The Wildcats won the tournament despite their sixth place ranking within the province of Manitoba.

This evening, the Switzerland U-17 team will play the Finland U-17 team in the male championship final. Both hockey programs are also still in the running at the 2014 World Junior Hockey Championships in Malmo, Sweden. Russia Severstal/Locomotiv was the last European team to win the Mac's tournament. They did so in 2011. The Finland Candidates won the 1992 Mac's Midget Hockey Tournament, while no team from Switzerland has picked up the championship trophy.
