Matthew Levine, 22, of 36 Forest Lane, was arraigned Aug. 16 and ordered held on $50,000 cash bail or $100,000 bond during his court appearance at First District Court in Hempstead.
Police said a 34-year-old female homeowner on Forest Lane was awoken just before 1 a.m. on Friday, when she heard a noise in her house. After the woman went downstairs to her kitchen, she allegedly encountered Levine, police said. The woman then ran from her home to a neighbor’s house to call 911.
Investigators said Levine – who was still in the house – then went to an upstairs bedroom in the house and began to strike a sleeping 8-year-old girl with a mop.
Detectives allege that he also stole the victim’s cell phone during the bizarre encounter.
When police arrived to the scene, they found Levine in the house. He was arrested and charged with first-degree burglary, second-degree assault, fourth-degree criminal possession of a weapon and endangering the welfare of a child.
As of Saturday morning, court records show Levine remains jailed in lieu of bail. He is slated to return to court on Aug. 20.
