On Jan. 1 Eye on Annapolis reports that the Westboro Baptist Church plans to protest on Jan. 2 at the courthouse in Anne Arundel County because of their approval of legalizing gay marriage. Maryland just legalized same sex marriage, which the controversial group is opposed to. They chose a picket date of Jan. 2 because that is when legal same sex marriages will take place.
Along with their disapproval of gay marriage is also same sex parenting, which they have also openly protested over their Twitter as well as in person. Several counter protests have also been scheduled for the same time Westboro plans to show up. In the past, the protests for same sex marriage as well as for same sex adoptions have been non-violent, however, they tend to draw very large counter-protest crowds.
Nobody is sure what the Westboro Baptist Church is hoping to accomplish by protesting as their complaints will not be justified, nor will the new law be over turned. The petition to label Westboro as a hate group is up to a quarter million signatures, the largest petition in the United States to date. If the petition is enacted, the group will lose their ability to be called a church, as well as its tax exempt status.
What do you think of the Westboro Church protest? Is it pointless?
