Fred Phelps, the founder and current pastor of the Westboro Baptist Church, despite his work as a civil rights attorney before he was disbarred, is a racist. In a March 15 report by BET, Nathan Phelps came forward and explained how the Westboro Baptist Church not only hates homosexuals, but also blacks.
Nathan Phelps is the son of Fred Phelps. He escaped the Westboro Baptist Church in the '70s. He called his father a “straight-up racist.” He explained that Fred Phelps only took civil rights cases because “there was lot of money” to be made.
“We would call black people 'DNs' at home,” Nathan Phelps explained. “It stood for dumb n***ers...We thought it was clever to call them that in front of them.”
Fred Phelps won several awards as a civil rights attorney. According to Nathan Phelps, those awards were giving to “an old fashioned, anti-black hate monger.”
Those familiar with Fred Phelps and the Westboro Baptist Church are not surprised by the fact Nathan Phelps thinks his father is a racist. The group is considered to a cult and a hate by the Southern Poverty Law Center. There is currently a petition to have the Westboro Baptist Church classified as a hate group and lose it's tax-exempt status.
This has not been a good past few days for Fred Phelps. In addition to his son calling him a racist, another former member of the Westboro Baptist Church has also come forward with other allegations. Lauren Drain stated she believes Fred Phelps had a homosexual encounter while he was at West Point and that Fred Phelps is gay. It is unknown if that alleged homosexual encounter was consensual or if Fred Phelps was raped by a man.
