Libby Phelps Alvarez, the granddaughter of the founder of the Westboro Baptist Church, came forward to explain how she had brainwashed by the Topeka-based church. In a report by the Daily News, dated Feb. 6, she also explained how she escaped from the group.
The Westboro Baptist Church is known for picketing funerals of military members, celebrities and almost anyone else. They believe that their deaths are caused by the support of homosexuality, abortion and anything else that the Westboro Baptist Church doesn't believe in.
Libby Phelps Alvarez stated she felt that the Westboro Baptist Church brainwashed her and other church members. The majority of the Westboro Baptist Church are members of the Phelps family; only a few of their members are not related to Fred Phelps.
The goal of the Westboro Baptist Church is not to convert others to their faith. It is to tell the world how they believe that God hates everyone except them. The Phelps family believes that only members of their church are Christians.
“There was a point when we started praying for people to die,” Libby Phelps Alvarez said. “I didn't actually do that but I was around when they did it.”
Libby Phelps Alvarez said she had been taught from an early age that the world was evil and everyone in it, except for the Westboro Baptist Church, were also evil. When she finally had enough, she stayed behind when the family went to picket a funeral and ran away from them and the Westboro Baptist Church. That was in 2009.
Libby Phelps Alvarez isn't the only Phelps family member to escape. Several others have escaped from the Westboro Baptist Church and the family. Those family members who do manage to escape are disowned by the Phelps family.
