Lauren Drain, a former member of the Westboro Baptist Church, is participating in a pro-gay marriage NOH8 campaign. According to a March 10 report by Starcasm, this is one of the most defiant acts of the 27-year-old since she was cast out from the Westboro Baptist Church five years ago.
Lauren Drain was banished from the Westboro Baptist Church because she questioned the teachings of its founder, Fred Phelps. Fred Phelps started the church in 1955. It is based on the principle that only a few people will go to Heaven and that God hates everyone else.
Unlike most members of the Westboro Baptist Church, Lauren Drain is not a member of the Phelps family. Her father joined the church about 13 years ago. There are only about 40 members of the Westboro Baptist Church and most of them are related to the Phelps family.
Lauren Drain is also an author. She wrote “Banished: Surviving My Years in the Westboro Baptist Church.” Her book was released earlier this month. It is about growing up in the Westboro Baptist Church and what is was like leaving the group.
At the time of publication, the Westboro Baptist Church had not released a statement about Lauren Drain or her participating in the pro-gay marriage campaign.
