In celebration of the longest night of 2013, West Woods Nature Center in Novelty, Ohio is holding its free annual Winter Solstice Candlelight Walk event on Saturday, December 21 from 7:30 p.m. - 9:30 p.m. Novelty is approximately a 40 minute drive from Cleveland.
Winter Solstice Candlelight Walk This indoor-outdoor interactive event features activities that will be a real treat for visitors of all ages who are holiday and outdoor enthusiasts in addition to those who are history buffs.
Indoor activities at the West Woods Nature Center include a performance by the Pilgrim Brass Choir and a holiday music singalong. Refreshments include hot cider.
Outdoors, visitors will be able to follow a candlelit route through the forest (accompanied by a Nature Center volunteer) where they will encounter educational and entertaining stations that explore the roots of modern holiday celebrations and highlight different civilizations and how the winter solstice was culturally observed.
Among some of the civilizations spotlighted will be the Druids (and the origins of mistletoe and holly), the Romans and Vikings and there will be information on traditional holiday symbols like the Christmas Tree and the Yule Log.
Make sure you dress appropriately for the weather as a good portion of the evening's events take place outdoors. A courtesy shuttle van will be available from the parking area.
Hours for the Winter Solstice event are 7:30 p.m. -9:30 p.m. with the last group for the candlelight walk departing at 9 p.m. Admission is free.
