A family is upset after their dog was shot by police in West Virginia, WTRF News reported April 30.

The Wheeling dog, a black German Shepherd, was allegedly deemed vicious by the city in April 2013.

The incident occured April 30 on 14th Street in East Wheeling, when police were flagged down by a person who reported they were being chased in an aggressive manner by the dog. The owners claim their dog was never aggressive.

The dog had been reported as "vicious dog at large" the night before being shot. At that time the owner was issued a citation.

Wheeling Police Chief Shawn Schwertfeger said a thorough investigation will be made, as is required whenever an officer discharges a weapon.
