Kyle Nash, “Smash Nash” as he is known, is a painter of portraits, mostly. His work plays heavily on shadow and light which mirrors his description of what he’s trying to convey. He paints the image of beautiful faces that hint at underlying emotions of heartache or longing. As Nash puts it he paints “a beautiful outside with a not so pleasant inside.” He usually works with acrylics but also pencils and graphite and more recently charcoal.

How he got his start

Nash is currently living in Glendale, having moved here 3 years ago. He grew up in the small town of Kirtland, New Mexico about five minutes from the Navajo reservation. He is also a Navajo. Nash is a self-taught artist who never took it seriously until he was19 or 20. He remembers his grandpa giving him a low-rider art magazine and telling him that it might inspire him. And that’s exactly what it did. He sat down that night and for the first time attempted to draw a human face. He realized that it was what he wanted to do for the rest of his life.

His inspirations

Nash draws his inspiration from many sources not in the least is human emotion; the successes and the failures, the passions of life, raw emotions good and bad. He also pulls inspiration from the people he meets, other artists works, photographs, and music. He is a very positive person who feels “that life should not be taken for granted and anything you want to do is possible.”
