A scent of sugar lies in the air upon entering West Town Bakery, a local confectionery found in Ukrainian Village. With a wide selection of treats to offer from traditional favorites like the chocolate frosted doughnut to more quirky selections like the s’mores doughssant (cross between a doughnut and croissant), customers with a sweet tooth crowd the bustling bakery weekday mornings to grab a quick bite.
Unhurried patrons sit at the casual but colorful seat-yourself diner area adjacent to the bakery, which displays the establishment’s name on a brick wall in vibrant graffiti. Brunch is served all day, and the menu contains both comfort classics—eggs benedict, chicken and waffles, French toast—and vegan options including the ever popular s’mores pancakes. But beware: the diner gets crowded on weekend mornings like most brunch places in Chicago and the food can take a while to come out of the kitchen.
The generous assortment of baked goods includes a selection of cakeballs (get the lemon almond), cupcakes (salted caramel is where it’s at), and much more. The locally grown coffee is also a crowd-pleaser. But the Mexican hot chocolate and freshly squeezed OJ are equally delicious caffeine-free options. Any of their brunch cocktails are also recommended.
