Musical theatre is not complete without this award winning play, but it has not always been titled West Side Story. When it was first conceived by choreographer Jerome Robbins, and written by Arthur Laurents, it was hailed as "East Side Story." This Shakespeare-inspired musical, scored by Leonard Bernstein, never opened.
After being set aside for six years, the musical found a new birth under a new title. With the aid of lyricist, Stephen Sondheim, it made its debut on Broadway in 1957 as West Side Story. Since opening, it has been labeled a classic. :
West Side Story is recommended for ages 13+. due to strong language, violence and some sensitive subject matter. Parental guidance is suggested.
