The West’s newest Bassmaster Elite Series pro Josh Bertrand from Gilbert, Ariz. made his rookie debut on the Sabine River System in Orange, Texas today. Bertrand found the first day of the first stop of the 2013 Elite circuit to be a challenge. “I’m glad to be here; it’s pretty amazing,” said Bertrand at his weigh-in interview.
The 24-year-old angler was able to boat three bass for a Day One total of 6-9. This put him in 34th place. While he remarked he wanted to make the top-50 cut, he also stated, “It’s a tough deal out here.”
Commenting on the crowd at the Elite Series event the rookie also stated, “There are a lot of anglers and a lot of support.”
Dean Rojas from Lake Havasu City, Ariz. leads the event on Day One with 15-10. Rojas also reeled in the Carhartt Big Bass of the day at 5-15. Only 17 of the 100 anglers brought in a full five-fish limit.
The 2013 Elite Series Sabine River Challenge presented by STARK Cultural Venues will continue tomorrow. Launch takes place at 7 a.m. CT and weigh-in begin at 3:15 p.m. CT.
