West Michigan Independence Day weather for 2014

Independence Day is today and this will be a nearly perfect day. Looking through the archives the weather hasn’t always been kind on the fourth of July. On several occasions severe weather and tornadoes impacted West Michigan with damage numerous injuries. In 2003, several people drown in rip currents in Lake Michigan. Looking at the records going back to 1892 for Grand Rapids reveals some wild temperature extremes. Readings range from the 40s in 1972 to 100° in set in 1897 and 1911. This holiday, temperatures will be slightly cooler than average.

As you plan your outdoor activities don’t forget the sunscreen. Under a mostly sunny sky temperatures will climb from morning temperatures in the low 50s into the mid 70s late in the afternoon with a light breeze.

If you wander to the beaches on Lake Michigan, temperatures will be in the low to mid 70s. This will be a nice day to spend time on Lake Michigan with waves generally less than one foot. Lake Michigan water temperatures near the shore are in the mid to upper 60s.
