Sheffield West Fork High senior Lindsey Peterson was taking a basketball team photo in the locker room before a game when it went terribly wrong.
The Iowa high school basketball player was with fellow teammates posing for the picture when she slipped and hit her face hard on the bench, NESN reported Jan. 2. The injury resulted in a gash and facial fractures on the West Fork High senior. Lindsey Peterson was rushed to the hospital where 100 stitches and three metal plates were used to treat her serious wounds. It is believed that she will require plastic surgery in the future to repair nerve damage.
West Fork High head coach Rodney Huber said this about the accident:
“It went straight through her gum, affected a few of her teeth and she had a big gash on the right side of her face.”
Peterson's accident happened on her 18th birthday. She will not be able to play for at least six weeks. In fact, the damage she suffered may have ended her high school basketball career, Huber said.
Somehow Peterson's teammates went on to play in the game with Riceville after the photo incident. The girls were shaken up by Peterson's accident, but they went on to a 55-18 win.
This type of fall is something rarely heard of. Sheffield West Fork High senior Lindsey Peterson has a long road ahead of her to recover from this type of injury, but she sounds like someone who will bounce back better than ever.
