West End Lounge Reopens at Drake

By the time it's scheduled to reopen on Monday, the West End Lounge will have only been closed for sixteen days. This speedy change of ownership came as a surprise to many Drake students, especially considering the fanfare over its final weekend. The general opinion about this move so far has been somewhat skeptical.

A source related to the previous ownership said the buyer intended on naming it "Rory's" but decided rather to buy the rights on the West End name instead. Possibly a measure to cut down the cost of reopening, but in my opinion a wise move when dealing with their main clientele -Drake students.

Still, some alumni are waiting to see whether or not West End's reopening will prompt them to return to their unofficial homecoming.

"The Drake Relays will be very different this year with the loss of a fraternity, and security will be cracking down harder than ever since the university is trying to get in the running to host the next Olympic trials" Said Gina Ceasar from the class of '07. "Many of us drove here two weeks ago to say goodbye, thinking it'd still be closed for sure by the Relays so I don't know if many people will come back at all."

"While it may be reopening, it'll never be the same for me. The West End I knew and loved is dead. May it rest in peace." Pretty strong words from Drake senior Bob Meyers. He also added that since the staff of bartenders will surely change, he won't get nearly the deals -read: free alcohol, which is what closed down West End in the first place.

Good luck to the new buyers. Like all owners in the past, they'll need it.

Let's get the facts straight, here... The most recent owners shortened the hours, never put a penny into repairs or upgrades, and left it to collegiates to "run" at their own accord--which they did by giving drinks away to everyone they knew. By the end, that was all that was left. Absent owners, students giving drinks to their friends, while the place fell apart around them. The grand closing?? An attempt on capitalizing on the good name of the establishment over the last 40 years to pay off some bills, I assume. The "new" owner/manager taking over this mess is actually the previous owner from the late 1990s and early 2000s. He is the guy that expanded the hours to include Sundays, built the deck in back, and is responsible for the only improvements that place has seen in the last 10 years. Being able to keep the name "West End" is not only appropriate, it is a name the current owner deserves.

You and Sarah are both totally right. This place would never fly if it weren't named West End. The place is a total dump now though so it'd be awesome if they fixed it up... just a little tiny bit.
