Philippine-based Grandmaster (GM) Wesley So earned a draw with Iranian GM Ehsan Ghaem Maghami at the Aeroflot Open 2010. The chess tournament is currently being held in Moscow, Russia.
The Cavite, Philippines native and chess whiz kid fought to a draw with the Iranian GM after 25 moves of a Queen's gambit.
So is one of the youngest GMs in the world at 16 years of age. He currently possesses an ELO rating of 2646 points.
The 16-year old will play the white pieces against 27 year-old GM Dmitry Bocharov (ELO 2594) of Russia in the 2nd round on Wednesday. The week-long event offers 21,000 euros (or approximately $29,000 USD) to the winners.
Wesley So's participation in Russia's Aeroflot Open is supported by the National Chess Federation of the Philippines (NCFP). He recently earned fifth place at the Corus B Chess Tournament in the Netherlands.
