Wes Welker suspended? It looks like the Denver Broncos star receiver may not be around for the first quarter of the 2014 season, which may hurt the Broncos offense. According to a Sportsline report on Sept. 2, Welker has been suspended for the first four games of the 2014 season for violating the NFL policy on performance-enhancing substances CBS Sports NFL Insider Jason La Canfora has confirmed.

This could be a big blow to the high-flying Denver offense that has four tough opponents right out of the gate. Denver will face Indianapolis, Kansas City, Seattle and Arizona to open the first month of play, four teams that all could (and should) be playoff bound this season.

According to the Denver Post, a source close to the team said Tuesday that although Welker will be suspended, he may be able to suit up for Week 1 vs. the Colts.

"Because the league had not yet notified the team of any discipline involving Welker they are proceeding with the expectation Welker will be available for the season opener Sunday night against Indianapolis."

As if losing Welker isn't going to be bad enough, the Broncos will also be without kicker their Pro-Bowl place-kicker Matt Prater, who will be serving a suspension on an alcohol-related violation. Usually losing a kicker isn't a huge deal, but Prater is one of the best kickers in the NFL.

Denver's firt game is this Sunday, Sept. 7 vs. Indianapolis at 8:30 p.m. ET
