Cats require certain vitamins and nutrients in order to thrive, and healthy, high-end pet supply companies take particular steps to include those in their foods. However, two days ago some Wellness cat food was found to be insufficient.
Thiamine, also known as vitamin B1, is a critical nutrient used by a cat’s system to metabolize carbohydrates. Two recent lots of Wellness canned cat food were discovered to have incorrect levels of thiamine, so the company is doing a voluntary recall of those products.
Eating a thiamine-deficient diet for several weeks can cause significant health risks for cats.
Symptoms include vomiting, drooling, decreased appetite, walking in circles, a lack of coordination or seizures.
If your cat has eaten the specific lots of the product and is displaying any of those symptoms, contact your veterinarian immediately.
The following lots are involved in the recall:
- Wellness Canned Cat (all flavors and sizes) with "best by" dates from 14APR 13 through 30SEP13
- Wellness Canned Cat Chicken & Herring (all sizes) with "best by" date of 10NOV13 and 17NOV13
Anyone that has cat food from these lots should immediately stop giving it to their pets, even if no symptoms are present. The company can be contacted at 1-877-227-9587 to arrange for return of the product and for reimbursement.
Wellness pet food is sold in many Sacramento area stores, including PetSmart, Petco, Incredible Pets and other pet supply retailers.
