Did you know that Wellington, Ohio was called the "Cheese Capital of America" during the late 1800's? Well, now you know and you can help celebrate the city's cheese history when you attend Wellington's 14th annual Cheese Heritage Festival on Friday, July 18, Saturday, July 19 and Sunday, July 20. Wellington is approximately a 48 minute drive from Cleveland.
Wellington's Cheese Heritage With more that 40 cheese factories in operation back when northern Ohio was prime dairy and farm country, Wellington, Ohio led the nation in cheese production in 1875. The city also produced butter and in its peak year of 1878, Wellington shipped over 6 million pounds of cheese and over a million pounds of butter all over the United States. Wellington's cheese-making industry ended around 1912 when the B.B. Herrick factory closed.
Cheese Heritage Festival Although there are no longer any cheese plants in Wellington, each year the city celebrates its cheese-making past with this free, family-friendly 3-day event.
It goes without saying that there will be plenty of cheese available for purchase (by the pound) and plenty of cheese in a variety of forms to eat (including deep-friend on a stick) at the Festival.
The Festival also features a Cheesecake Bake-Off in addition to a a Macaroni & Cheese Eating Contest for all ages and a Cheese Pizza Eating Contest (separate divisions for children and adults).
For the adults, the Festival will offer wine tasting.
Make sure you don't miss the big parade at the Festival being held on Saturday at 3 p.m.
Other activities at the Cheese Heritage Festival include games, amusement rides, corn hole tournaments, live entertainment and the Gary Jordan 5K/10K Run and one mile Walk.
Hours for the Wellington Cheese Heritage Festival are 5 p.m. - 9 p.m. on Friday, 10 a.m., - 10 p.m. on Saturday and noon - 6 p.m. on Sunday. Admission and parking are free.
