A Much Needed Economic Boost!

On Tuesday February 1, 2011, First Lady Michelle Obama announced that Charlotte, NC, was selected as the host city of the 2012 Democratic National Committee’s convention next Summer. “Charlotte is a city marked by its southern charm, warm hospitality, and an “up by the bootstraps” mentality that has propelled the city forward as one of the fastest-growing in the South. Vibrant, diverse, and full of opportunity, the Queen City is home to innovative, hardworking folks with big hearts and open minds. And of course, great barbecue,” wrote the First Lady in her email announcement.
Charlotte beat out St. Louis, MO, Cleveland, OH, and Minneapolis, MN, to be the official site of this coveted event that will no doubt serve as a much needed economic boost to the city’s coffers. This will be the first time since the late 1980’s that the DNC has been held in the South. President Obama is the first Democrat to win Charlotte and North Carolina since President Carter in the late 1970’s. The city will once again be in the national spotlight as we were in 1994 when we hosted the NCAA’s Final Four. A lot has changed here since then and I have witnessed it all as a tour developer and guide since 1993.
I remember seeing big tents all over the city back then to house the myriad of parties that accompanies such a mega event. I even got a chance to attend a few parties myself and it was like nothing that I have ever experienced. So many people, so much music, so many happy souls having the time of their life. Unfortunately, that crowd was not very interested in learning the history of the Queen City just like most sporting crowds to include NASCAR and the CIAA. Hopefully the DNC crowd will be a lot more interested in learning something about the city they may never visit again? If so, Queen City Tours and Travel will be there with bells on to impart to them what we have learned in our 17+ years of experience.
