The West Side Market is making its triumphant return this Monday, February 18th. After a fire on Jan 30th closed the market for repairs, vendors are excited and ready for a busy President’s Day reopening. Every inch of the market is open; from the produce arcade, meat and fish vendors, coffee and popcorn shops to bread and pastries vendors. Not only do businesses want their business back, every person in Cleveland should be interested in squeaky clean and polished market. The fire itself required the entire market, even the separate fruit and vegetable corridor, to be cleaned, inspected and now grandly reopened.
Stands at the West Side Market that a pregnant woman interested in health and wellness are many, some may surprise you.
Narrin’s Asian Spice
Spices can be very beneficial to health and wellness. Spices like turmeric and cumin are used to flavor foods, but they have amazing healing properties too. Turmeric is part of the ginger family and contains vitamins, minerals and proteins. Turmeric and cumin have anti-inflammatory and anti-carcinogenic properties which are enhanced when cooked. Cumin is seen to specifically lower cholesterol and both are seen to reduce platelet aggregation which leads to high cholesterol.
Fruit and Vegetable Stands
Though we are in the middle of winter in Cleveland travel the fruit and vegetable stands anyways. The cruciferous vegetables; cauliflower, broccoli, onions, garlic, are still fresher than other delicate vegetables and have many health promoting properties. Garlic specifically can help with strokes and heart disease, is known for its antifungal properties and can lower cholesterol. Cruciferous vegetables are also high in fiber, vitamins like C and A and minerals like iron and selenium.
The Cheese Shops
The cheese shops are an easy stop, dairy and pregnancy go hand-in-hand. Stay away from the unpasteurized cheese, these can contain harmful bacteria to the baby like; brie, feta, blue cheese, or Mexican cheese like queso blanco. Cheeses that are safe to eat are hard cheese such as cheddars, Swiss, mozzarella, parmesan, Colby-jack. As long as they’re pasteurized they’re safe to eat when pregnant.
Enjoy the West Side Market tomorrow and for days after. It’s a Cleveland landmark cherished and loved by many.
