Weimar wonders highlight Bay Area jazz week

Germany probably isn't the first place that pops into mind at the suggestion of wild, adventurous jazz cultures. Yet the land of oompah music and Kraftwerk has had its moments, most notably during the pre-Nazi Weimar Era, a time of runaway inflation, political chaos and -- not coincidentally -- zesty cultural experimentation.

In case you missed the fun the first time around, SFJAZZ celebrates Weimar wildness this week with an eclectic trio of performances. First up Thursday is Ute Lemper, a cabaret singer like no other, working with a trio and the gutter poetry of Charles Bukowski.

Friday and Saturday belong to Max Raabe and Palast Orchester, a 13-piece big band that mixes period tunes with modern pop, all performed in the giddy, overtly sexy style that had the Nazis dreaming up laws like these.

Sunday has local iconoclasts Clubfoot Orchestra performing live accompaniment to "Metropolis," Fritz Lang's hugely influential 1927 dystopian/expressionist film fantasy/nightmare. All shows are at 7:30 p.m. (plus a 4 p.m. matinee for "Metropolis"), and tickets are $20 to $80.
