With summer practically here, many of us are thinking of summer and what to wear – shorts, tank tops, sundresses and swimsuits. First things first, lose weight so we can look good and feel comfortable in that summer attire! What can help us lose weight with so little time? With so many options out there, there is one plan that has gain notoriety recently -- a vegan diet. A vegan diet can lead to weight loss, sometimes rapidly. In the vegan plan, you can lose up to 2 pounds per week provided you stick with the plan. However, losing weight too quickly can lead to a loss in muscle mass as well as vital nutrients so it is important to maintain a healthy, balanced diet regimen.

A vegan diet is a structured plan that includes lots of vegetables and fruits but excludes meat, eggs and dairy products. A vegan diet also avoids animal products and by-products as well as sugar and wines. The vegan diet has gained attention since Beyonce and Jay Z announced late last year that they were going vegan for 22 days. The results were seen when Beyonce appeared on the Grammy Awards looking rather svelte. Beyonce had previously lost weight for her role in Dream Girls using the lemonade diet for ten days.

There are similarities between going vegan and being vegetarian. Both diets require adequate amounts of vegetables and fruits. And, both diets contribute to weight loss, less consumption of fats and cholesterol and eliminates animal product which is a source of fat and cholesterol. There are also benefits to going vegan and vegetarian, even if temporary. According to Medicinent.com some of the health benefits attributed to following a vegan and vegetarian diet “are at a lower risk for cardiovascular disease, hypertension, type 2 diabetes, diverticulosis, renal disease, some cancers (including lung and breast), and gallstones. The reason for these health benefits comes from the foods that are reduced or omitted as well as from the foods that are consumed. A healthy lifestyle that includes physical activity and a low consumption of alcohol and tobacco may also play a role in acquiring these benefits.” www.medicinenet.com

So for adequate weight loss and you want to try veganism, stick to the plan, avoid the diet for an extended period, and consult a physician before you try it.
