Sometimes in life it is necessary to choose a route off-track in order to take the most appropriate path even though this diversion may seem like a setback. It’s important to weigh your options wisely!
While on a recent family trip, in Northern California, an interesting scenario surfaced, one that reflects this in a literal sense.
We were about 20 minutes South of the Oregon state line and driving out of the Redwoods with a destination of Reno, Nevada. It was a long drive, over 7 hours from Crescent City, California to Reno, Nevada. As we headed out, I mentioned that MapQuest had detailed we had to go north for a short distance even though we needed to ultimately head south.
One of my teenagers couldn’t fathom why we would go north, at all, if we had a southern destination. It made no sense to him. Although I didn’t know the area, I suspected the north route would save some time considering all the mountains we had driven through as we came up the California coast earlier in our trip. I was ready to venture north, trust MapQuest and save time by routing away from and around the mountains.
But, since we were on vacation, it was a battle I was willing to give up, it was all new landscape and I was just happy to be away from home. Plus my boyfriend was interested in seeing a particular museum that was more in route taking the direct south choice. Considering this, we tossed MapQuest aside and headed south.
Had we only known that the museum wasn’t very impressive and the direct route south wasn’t so direct, we would have gone north and instead, we would have saved time. Our choice actually added over 2 hours of driving time to our trip. It was a scary route that I wouldn’t wish on anyone. It involved nonstop windy roads, cliffs and over anxious drivers speeding down never-ending mountains.
Think of how this scenario plays out in our day-to-day lives. Life choices can be deceiving; direct paths usually involve hidden agendas and unexpected turns.
Always take caution; look twice at anything that appears to be the easy choice. Take the time necessary to compare your options and really understand what each involves. Sometimes it is smarter to route around the mountain or obstacle in your way instead of facing it head on.
Choose wisely!
