Weese, Benda fire perfect games; Hoyt and Matley connect for 298s

Perfect games by Jerry Weese and George Benda, 298s by Wayne Hoyt and Bill Matley, and a 702 series by Renae Gross are the highlights of this week's Examiner.com report of top scores from bowling centers in the Sarasota-Manatee-Charlotte County area.

Weese rolled his 300 game in the middle of a 734 series in the Tuesday Night Men's League at Treasure Lanes in Port Charlotte. He opened with a 232 game and finished with 202.

Benda started slowly with games of 180 and 185 before attaining perfection in the RG Strikeline Seniors League at Bowland Port Charlotte.

Hoyt's 298 came in Game 2 of a 729 series in the Tony Clevenger Mortgage League at Englewood Bowl, and Matley had a 298 in the middle of a 674 series in the Senior Classic at AMF Venice Lanes.

Corey Cyr converted a first-frame spare, then strung 11 consecutive strikes for a 290 game that jump-started a 788 series in the Kays-Ponger-Uselton Men's League at Treasure Lanes.

Carl Sawyer has been on a tear at Sarasota Lanes. He posted a 290 game to open a 687 series in the Yoder's Restaurant League, along with a 704 series in the Cook Spring Invitational League and a 741 series that included a 269 game in the La Malinche Restaurant League.

The top accomplishment by a female bowler was a 702 series by Renae Gross on games of 213, 267 and 222 in her first apperance of the season in the Tuesday Morning Ladies League at Treasure Lanes. On the previous evening, she had a 678 series in the Kays-Ponger-Uselson Ladies League at the same center.

Several area bowlers turned in far-over-average performances. Ed Netz posted a 102-over 288 to open a 662 series in the Tony Clevenger Mortgage League at Englewood Bowl, Nicholas Bohlman had a 167-over 401 series in the Saturday Junior League at Sarasota Lanes, Ken Reeves had a 147-over 654 series in the Yoder's Restaurant League at Sarasota Lanes, and Kevin Sullivan had a 146-over 704 series in the Tuesday Men's League at Treasure Lanes.
