Weekly ski report Jan. 4: Mother Nature brings great skiing to the state

It has been cold, there has been snow and for all of us who love to ski, things could only get better if we get more snow and win the lottery and then we could ski every day.

For the alpine skier, Michigan is blessed with 51 ski areas situated across the state offering nearly 1,000 runs and 260 lifts. When it comes to Nordic skiing, there is an almost endless list of possibilities, like the Nordic trails at Boyne Mountain in upper Michigan, to the trails at the Huron-Clinton Metroparks.

For those who like to go off trail into unbroken snow as I do, there are hiking trails galore across the state that turn into the perfect cross-country trails when the white stuff falls. Here in southeastern Michigan, two of the best are at Proud Lake and Pinckney recreation areas.

There are way too many ski areas to list here, but there is great resource at the Pure Michigan skiing website where you can find the current conditions and contact information for all 51 ski areas. There are also links to discount deals, maps showing the location of each ski area and a lot more, so check it out.

But for us in the down state, southeastern part of the state, here are the conditions are being reported by our local ski areas as of Jan. 4 at 5 p.m.
