I had the chance to catch up with one of the rising stars of the diamond, lyricist Phil Ade’ on U Street earlier this week. One of Phil’s most notable recent appearances was at the Rock the Vote sponsored concert at the 9:30 club earlier this month. Watching and listening to Phil, he appears to be way beyond his years. Check the convo we had. This is your weekly 1-on-1 with Phil Ade’ .

LA: What’s really good ? How’s it goin?

PHIL: I’m good.

LA: That’s what’s up. I want to start with a couple of questions that some of the ladies out there who know i'm interviewing you have tasked me wth asking. Two specifically; first of all how old are you?

PHIL: Twenty years old.

LA: OK. The second question is. are the songs that you write true stories?

PHIL: Yeah for the most part. They are all based off of true experiences.

LA: OK. Now I know that you are not originally a Washingtonian. How did you come to settle into the DC music scene?

PHIL: My family moved here because my father had taken a job here. I decided to stay because the culture and the music scene is so underrepresented. DC has it’s own vibe with the music and everything. It really is it’s own culture. It’s just been untapped in the music market.

LA: I’m from New York and so I feel you on that. Every other region is represented, east coast, west coast, mid west, dirty south; but dc has been ignored by the mainstream. Are there any DC artists in particular that you respect, and/or would like to work with?

PHIL: Definitely Tabi. Tabi Bonney. The way he does his music is totally different from any other artist. He definitely has his own range and I really respect what he does.

LA: Yeah he is, I hope to get him for a One-on-One as well. I got three more questions for you, and then I’ll let you go. I promised I’d be brief. Your man Dope Sunny, he’s produced for you, and the chemistry is great. How did that come to be?

PHIL: It’s funny because we met through a mutual friend. A dude named J Greedy, he’s a local artist in Chicago. My dad is Nigerian, he’s Nigerian as well and he heard some of my music and reached out to me via myspace. He begin telling his friends about my music, one of which was Sunny. Sunny reached out to me, we did the song and it was crazy!

LA: 368 Music Group, is the label you are on. Tell me how that happened.

PHIL: I went to school in Alabama last fall. I used to rhyme with a friend from school there and he put me on with his brother T, who is a manager with Paperboys Management. T was able to get me in front of Raheem DeVaughn. and 368 is one of Raheem’s endeavors. That’s the way that all worked out.

LA: Cool. Last question man, what’s next from Phil Ade’? Are there any big dates, new releases anything like that coming up that people need to know about?

PHIL: My first big thing is my project “Starting on JV”. It comes out on July 10th and will be on the website www.368musicgroup.com for download when it drops. Look out for it when it comes The album release is gonna be at Common Wealth DC Boutique, 1781 Florida Ave., NW check out my myspace for the exact date. Hit me on my myspace, www.myspace.com/philade3o1 and my twitter www.twitter.com/philade301 .

LA: I just want you to know, I shout you out all day on Twitter.com. Follow Friday’s I always throw your name out there! Thank you so much for being willing to do this interview. We gon’ get it in, and I’m out.

Be sure to follow Phil Ade’ on his twitter and his myspace , check for the album release on July 10th. Special shouts as well to Charmayne and T of Paperboys Management. Thank you guys as well.
