Will Power won the race, but Scott Dixon took home the championship in the IZOD IndyCar Series finale on Saturday night. Here’s more on this and the rest of the weekend’s national auto racing action.
IZOD IndyCar Series – Will Power went to victory lane in the MAVTV 500 at Auto Club Speedway in Fontana, California, followed across the finish line by Ed Carpenter, Tony Kanaan, James Hinchcliffe and 2013 IndyCar champion Scott Dixon. Dixon’s main competition in the championship battle, Helio Castroneves, finished sixth, losing the title by 27 points after leading the standings for most of the season until the double-header at Houston. Simon Pagenaud finished third in points.
Sprint Cup Series – Jamie McMurray became the second non-Chaser in as many races to win during the Chase, taking home the checkered flag in the Camping World RV Sales 500 at Talladega Superspeedway on Sunday. Dale Earnhardt Jr., Ricky Stenhouse Jr., Paul Menard and Kyle Busch rounded out the top five. Jimmie Johnson jumped ahead of Matt Kenseth by four points in the Chase battle after Johnson finished 13th and led the most laps, while Kenseth finished 20th.
Camping World Truck Series – while the “big one” never really occurred on Sunday, Saturday’s fred’s 250 at Talladega made up for it, with four multi-truck wrecks in the final 27 laps including a 12-car scrapyard in the final turn. Johnny Sauter emerged from the rubble victorious, followed by David Starr, Ross Chastain, Parker Kligerman and Dakoda Armstrong.
