NHRA Mello Yello Drag Racing Series – Pro Stock Motorcycle rider Angie Smith won the first Wally of her career Sunday at New England Dragway in Epping, New Hampshire, home of the Auto-Plus NHRA New England Nationals. Her opponent in the finals – her husband and team owner, 2013 PSM champ Matt Smith. “I'm really tired of dusting all of (Matt's) Wallys,” said Mrs. Smith post-race. “I at least want to dust one of mine at the house. Now I have one, and I'm good with that."
Tony Schumacher (Top Fuel), Ron Capps (Funny Car) and Dave Connolly (Pro Stock) also took home Wallys from New England Dragway.
Sprint Cup Series – Carl Edwards took the win in the Toyota/SaveMart 350 at Sonoma Raceway in California on Sunday, beating Hendrick Motorsports drivers Jeff Gordon and Dale Earnhardt Jr. to the checkered flag. Jamie McMurray and Paul Menard rounded out the top five, followed by Kasey Kahne, Jimmie Johnson, Marcos Ambrose, Greg Biffle and Clint Bowyer.
Nationwide Series – in the weekend’s other road course race, Brendan Gaughan won the first Nationwide Series race of his career at Road America in Elkhart Lake, Wisconsin, home of Saturday’s Gardner Denver 200 Fired Up by Johnsonville. Alex Tagliani took home a runner-up finish, followed by Kevin O’Connell, rookie Chase Elliott and JJ Yeley.
