Where to find good beer

The growing Texas craft beer and pub chain The Ginger Man opened their latest location in Dallas' Lakewood area just a couple of weeks ago. Originally I thought this an odd choice for a second Dallas shop, a little too close to the McKinney Avenue (Boll Street) site merely four miles away, but now that it is open it seems unnatural not to have one here.

The new location is at that dog-leg of Abrams where it meets Gaston Avenue, that collection of restaurants and bars across from the country club that includes Whole Foods and the Lakewood Theater. To be precise, the Ginger Man took over the location of an old Italian restaurant (Angelo's) on La Vista just east of the Gaston intersection and as it has been built, it looks like it has always been there.

This feel of this Lakewood location is more true to the Ginger Man traditional pub image of plenty of dark woods and low lighting (the Plano and Southlake locations are a bit more modern styled, as per their local environments). The interior is oddly angular given the layout of the space and a major support column stands directly in front of the bar but the complaints end there. The interior is spacious and has a high ceiling to accommodate the staircase leading to additional seating on the second floor.

The front wall is paneled and can be retracted in good weather, leaving the space partially open to the street. There is no biergarten or outdoor seating per se but the second floor also includes retractable doors and an almost wraparound patio with a view of the Lakewood Theater marquis. Whereas downstairs has the standard hardwood benches, tables and pub chairs of the other locations, the upstairs interior is well-appointed with some plush leather furniture.

The beers? If you've been to any of the Ginger Man locations, you know the selection (70+ on draft, around 100 in bottles). No real surprises with this operation, both in tap/bottle offerings or in the kitchen. The real story here is the location, and sharing the block with the Whole Foods bar, Times Ten Cellars, Cock & Bull and The Balcony Club makes this spot an instant destination.

Recommended pint: Lakewood Brewing is sure to keep beers on cask servings at this relatively close location.
