Where to find good beer
Imagine my surprise that I have yet to hear anything positive said about our new Dallas Spec’s location, much to the finger-wagging shame of my craft beer friends. The only impressions and opinions shared with me have been universally negative, critical of an understocked and overcrowded store yet at full capacity.
I have been a long-time fan of Spec’s stores, faithfully stocking up on hard-to-find craft beers and imports on visits to Houston and Austin. I can vouch personally for their selection, in-house expertise and corporate buying power, and welcome them finally to North Texas to fill the voids left us by the bankruptcy of local chain Majestics and Centennial surviving only due to an oil-investors buyout.
The first Metroplex location (first of several) at the corner of Walnut Hill and 75/Central technically opened for public sales this past December. When I visited about two weeks ago, armies of employees were still unpacking boxes of product that lined the aisles. Any evaluations should be put on hold until hiring and stocking is finished but I can assure you that the Houston-based chain is a very big deal.
Although the beer selection (about half in coolers, half on shelves) was not impressive at the time of my visit, I have no doubt it will be one of if not the best source for craft beer in Dallas when complete. The name and strength of the corporation behind it almost guarantees it can leverage a major portion of stock any distributor waves in front of the Texas market. Be patient.
This Dallas store seems to be slightly larger than others I’ve visited. Aisles are full of a wide variety of spirits and wines as well as gourmet foods (including a frozen section) along with a full deli counter, a coffee bar and a wide selection of bar-related hardware and glassware. Imagine if Sam’s Club and Central Market had a boozy baby store—this would be it.
The only down side is the layout of the physical store location and access, almost forcing drivers to circle the building along poorly planned driveways before ever seeing a branded storefront. An official grand opening is planned for next weekend, January 20–22nd. Reserve judgment of this place until after that date.
Recommended Pint: Five percent discount if you pay with cash. Ask for special beer releases not on display.
