Please note:  the events calendar at Princeton University is lighter than usual due to the January schedule of final exams and submission of student grades. The spring semester begins Feb. 6 with an increase in activities.

Friday, Jan. 27: Booked for the Evening: A Concert to Celebrate a Life of Words and Music. Conductor Mark Laycock brings together the Vienna Chamber Orchestra, the Russian Chamber Chorus of New York, renowned cellist Sharon Robinson and master violinist Jaime Laredo in concert to celebrate the 98th birthday of William "Bill" H. Scheide. Scheide is a music scholar, bibliophile and philanthropist and activist whose generosity includes many contributions to Princeton's libraries and rare book collections. Tickets are $35 for the 8 p.m. concert at Richardson Auditorium in Alexander Hall can be purchased at the box office.

Saturday, Jan. 28:  Lecture: "Science on Saturday" at the Princeton Plasma Physics Lab. Join students, teachers and curious others in "Exploring the Warped and Violent Universe" presented by Prof. Nervis Mavalvala of the Physics Department at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in Cambridge, Massachusetts. Doors open at 8:15 a.m., with the lecture beginning promptly at 9:30 a.m., followed by a moderated question-and-answer session. The session typically ends by 11:15 a.m. The 27-year-old popular series will run until March 10 with different topics explored every week. The event is free and open to the public.

Sunday, Jan. 29Outdoor Action:  Wilderness First Responder training course for those who onduct field research, travel internationally, are interested in the medical or healthcare fields, or work outdoors. The course offers professional training in first aid administration in remote wilderness areas and/or severe environments. Participants learn how to create simple, improvised equipment and conduct patient examinations and evaluations, review body systems and anatomy, and provide trauma care and use of splints and backcountry medicine, with environmental factors included in evaluations. Upon course completion, participants receive a three-year certification with eligibility to teach wilderness first aid on campus. Sunday, Jan. 29:  Film/Lecture:  Israeli filmmaker, director and producer Dani Menkin will share his perspectives on filmmaking at McCormick Hall 101 from 3:30 to 5 p.m. Menkin's latest film, Dolphin Boy, documents the four-year story of a popular teenaged Israeli boy living in an Arab village who is brutally beaten to near death. The film follows his journey to recovery and healing while chronicling the horrific toll of violent human behavior and the healing powers of nature and love. Menkin's other films include "Je T’aime I Love You Terminal" (2011) and "39 Pounds of Love" (2005-07), another documentary. Admission is free.

Sunday, Jan. 29:  Concert:  The Princeton Girl Choir will perform its annual winter concert, "United in Song," from 4-6 p.m. at Richardson Auditorium in Alexander Hall. The choir is composed of 200 girls 8-18 from the central New Jersey and eastern Pennsylvania region performing choral music in all genres and periods. Members meet weekly to practice and travel during the summer months for performance. Tickets are $22 and can be purchased at Richardson Auditorium.
