After a brief hiatus following Free Week Austin due to seasonal illness, we are back with a preview of this weekend's live music offerings. Our recommendations are just a few of the many great shows happening in Austin this weekend. Two of the listings are free. You can keep it local by going out to see these local artists. El Tule is playing at Central Market to kick off the weekend. Bob Schneider's Scabs are back for another raucous set. Los Lobos hits the stage at ACL Live Friday. Shakey Graves headlines No-Comply's Sixth Anniversary party and The Eastern Sea play The Parish.
Thursday, January 17
El Tule - Central Market - 6:30-9:30 p.m. - Free
El Tule, a Latin music influenced world music act we first saw at the Chronicle Hot Sauce Festival, is scheduled to play a free, two-set show at Central Market North tonight. Elements of reggae, cumbia, and salsa appear in their music, encouraging audiences to dance and enjoy the sound. Since the show is early and located next to the playground, it is perfect for the whole family to attend. You can even buy beer and wine inside the store.
Heartless Bastards, My Jerusalem - Antone's - 8 p.m. - $20
Garage rockers, Heartless Bastards begin a winter tour at Antone's tonight in support of their album, "Arrow". The new album was produced by Spoon's Jim Eno at his Public Hi-Fi Studio. Recorded on the heels of a 2011 tour with Drive by Truckers, the new material sounds tight, like a band that has been playing a ton of gigs. New track, "Got to Have Rock n Roll" is free to stream on the band's website.
Heartless Bastards are taking local rockers, My Jerusalem on four dates of the tour before hooking up with Dead Confederate for the remaining U.S. dates. Then the band heads to Europe for an eight-date February run.
We got to preview My Jerusalem Wednesday evening at the Do 512 Shiner Lounge Session. If you are heading to the show tonight make sure you make it to the club in time to catch this explosive act lead by singer/guitarist, Jeff Klein. Klein's baritone, snarls and howls recalls Ian Astbury of The Cult.
Their album, "Preachers" was released in October 2012 and was also produced by Eno. According to Do 512's Jimmy Stewart, the band just finished a tour supporting Los Angeles garage-punk legends, X who appeared at Fun Fun Fun Fest in November. The band is also appearing at SXSW in March.

Pachanga Fest presents Los Lobos Acoustic - ACL Live - 8:00 p.m. - $29-45
East L.A. icons, Los Lobos play acoustic ACL Live Friday. The event is presented by Pachanga Fest, an Austin Latin music festival in May. The Grammy-award winning act's special acoustic set will be supported by Los Texmatics. Los Lobos has been touring for over 30 years and their music spans a wide variety of genres. They even do a mean cover of The Grateful Dead's "Bertha". Expect the unexpected at this show.
Shakey Graves, La Migra, Kid Slyce - Club de Ville - 9 p.m. - Free
Shakey Graves is the stage name of singer, Alejandro Rose-Garcia, whose one-man act is hard to beat. Given that the show is brought to fans free by No-Comply Skate Shop who are celebrating their sixth anniversary, the price is hard to beat as well. We have seen Graves perform several times and every show was worth seeing. Along with the guitar, the singer also plays a homemade kick drum fashioned out of an old suitcase. La Migra and Kid Slyce support.
The Scabs, Suite 709, Roxy Roca - Antone's - 9 p.m. - $18
Given all of Bob Schneider's musical projects, The Scabs may be the most entertaining. The 9-piece band plays up tempo, playful and at times, debaucherous music. Their show is always entertaining. Supporting acts Suite 709 and Roxy Roca are also known for getting audiences dancing. Expect a good time if you head to Antone's on Friday.
Saturday, January 19
The Eastern Sea, Kopecky Family Band, Emily Wolfe - The Parish - 8 p.m. - $12
2012 Austin City Limits Music Festival performers The Eastern Sea and The Kopecky Family Band are scheduled at The Parish Saturday night. Led by Matt Hines, The Eastern Sea always turn in a good performance. The local indie-popsters have been turning heads recently with their recent release, "Plague". This is the only chance to see them on their current tour which keeps the band on the road through February. Emily Wolfe opens the show.
