After spending most of last week out of town (and feeling a bit left out) it seemed appropriate to pen another weekend preview with all the great live music on tap in Austin. There is an exceptional double-bill, The Boxing Lesson and The Calm Blue Sea on Friday. Saturday our favorite local, progessive, rock band, White Denim is performing and Kebabalious is picking up the tab. Possibly the most famous blues guitarist alive, B.B. King will grace the ACL Live Moody Theater stage Sunday. Even a novice music fan could accidentally stumble upon a great show in the "Live Music Capitol" over the next few days.

The Calm Blue Sea - The Boxing Lesson - The ND at 501 Studios - Doors 9pm - $7
Experimental rock band, The Calm Blue Sea (TCBS) headlines a great bill that includes an Examiner favorite, The Boxing Lesson along with Frank Smith and A House A Home at The ND at 501 Studios.
We caught a great set by TCBS during Wild Frontier Fest last month. Many national media outlets compare them to Explosions in the Sky (EITS), but The Calm Blue Sea features less guitar and more room to explore subtle themes within the arrangements. Their sound is closer to Japanese post rockers, Mono than EITS. Music writers from other parts of the country tend to mention the bands together because they are both Austin-based and play instrumental progressive music.
Be sure to make it in time to see pysch rock trio, The Boxing Lesson perform. We cannot get enough of the music of Paul Waclawsky and Jaylinn Davidson who form the nucleus of the band. From etheral, Pink Floyd-esque songs like "Muerta" from the recent EP to the rocking, "Age of Consent" (see video), their talent is undeniable. If there is a band in Austin that should gain success in the next year, The Boxing Lesson are as likely candidates as we can imagine. After seeing them perform live, we think you will agree.

Kababalicious 5th Anniversary Party with White Denim - Mug Shots - 10:30pm - FREE
You know what sounds like a good idea when you have had a few beers watching live music downtown? Kebabalicious food trailer. They are celebrating their 5th anniversary by throwing a party with progressive rockers, White Denim Saturday. This sounds like a good idea even if you have not had a beer yet. James Petralli and the band put on an electrifying show. If you buy a kebab, they'll even throw in some "keg beer" gratis. To recap, free show, free beer, kebabs and White Denim, it's a progressive rock party on a plate. Be sure to thank the Kebabalicious folks.

B.B. King - ACL Live at The Moody Theater - Doors 6:30pm, Show 8:00pm - $51-81
76 year-old blues legend, B.B. King is appearing at ACL Live at The Moody Theater Sunday evening. The master bluesman has recorded with Eric Clapton and Irish rockers U2. His song, "The Thrill is Gone" was given a Grammy Hall of Fame award in 1998 because of it's "historical significance".
Here's more from the ACL Live site:
"For more than half a century B.B. King has defined the blues for a worldwide audience. Since he started recording in the 1940s, he has released over fifty albums, many of them classics. B.B. continues to tour extensively, averaging over 250 concerts per year around the world. Classics such as "Payin' The Cost To Be The Boss," "The Thrill Is Gone," How Blue Can You Get," "Everyday I Have The Blues," and "Why I Sing The Blues" are concert (and fan) staples. Over the years, the Grammy Award-winner has had two #1 R&B hits, 1951's "Three O'Clock Blues," and 1952's "You Don't Know Me," and four #2 R&B hits, 1953's "Please Love Me," 1954's "You Upset Me Baby," 1960's "Sweet Sixteen, Part I," and 1966's "Don't Answer The Door, Part I."
